Review: Lusty action-packed story about a fighter and the young woman he rescues from a brutal, abusive father. The book was strongly tilted towards victims of abuse, both children and women, with significant emphasis on the way it affects young males growing up with violence in the home. Quick, easy read for a lazy weekend afternoon.
Jagger came from a violent home. His mother had stayed in an abusive environment because she didn’t want to lose or leave her three sons. Unfortunately, cancer had done what she couldn’t, taking her away from the sons she’d loved. The three are now grown, and in this third book in the series, the only one alone is the youngest son, underground MMA fighter Jagger. He’s seen the young girl next door and he’s heard her getting verbally and physically attacked by her father, his landlord. One night he just can’t take it anymore, and even though he knows he shouldn’t, he steps in and beats up the ba$t@rd. Unfortunately this gets him kicked out of his apartment and faced with a restraining order so he can’t go near the daughter again.
The next six months he secretly leaves food, books and other gifts for her. He really wants to continue his mother’s legacy of bringing good into the world to combat the bad going on all around. He’s hoping one day Tatiana will choose to leave her desperately bad situation and he wants to make sure she knows he’s there to help.
Tatiana has been threatened and told lies for so long by her dad that she’s afraid to hope for a better life. It’s only when she’s pushed to the edge and doesn’t think that she can survive her father’s next beating that she actually reaches out to Jagger for help.
Against his will, Jagger is attracted to Tatiana. In trying to do a good thing for her, he doesn’t want her to think that she owes him anything–that he won’t help her unless she sleeps with him. But when she doesn’t understand, when she thinks his refusal means that he doesn’t want her, all his walls come down.
The story line was good, but for me, there was a lack of suspense–I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never did. I really liked the characters and all of the ingredients were there, but the end result didn’t live up to its potential. Thanks!
